Fall River – Maria do Carmo Lopes, age 81, of New Bedford, MA passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Charlton Memorial Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Maria was born in St. Michael, Azores, Portugal to the late Antonio Lopes Correia and Maria (Cabral de Medeiros) Lopes Correia. She had worked as a sewing machine operator for a clothing manufacturer.
Maria loved cooking, baking and especially spending time with family, friends, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (they were the world to her). She also enjoyed playing cards and dominos, loved dancing and singing, getting her nails and hair done, as well as shopping and various outings.
She is survived by her sons, late Staff Sergeant Joseph Camara and his surviving spouse Anna Camara, John Camara and his spouse Charlene Camara and David Camara; daughters, Nancy Soares and her husband Joao Soares, Diane Xavier and her companion Bruce DaRocha as well as her late husband Leonard Xavier, Michelle Camara and her companion Jeffrey Amaral and stepdaughter, Laudalina Copeland and her late husband Bill Copeland.
Maria is also survived by her grandsons, Scott, Jonathan, Matthew, Brandon and Cory; her granddaughters, Tiffany, Angela, Ashley, Cheree, Renee, Emberly and Jada; great-grandsons, Travis, Joshua, Aksel, Landon and Giovanni; great-granddaughters, Mackenzie, Paisley, Juliette, Scarlett, Aubrey, Gabriella, Gisele and Mickayla; her siblings, Maria L. Viveiros and Manuel A. Viveiros and her sisters-in-law, Julia Correia, Deloris Correia and Filomena Oliveira; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her late husband Joao Moniz Camara and her late siblings, Manuel Lopes, Deolinda Correia, Serafim Correia, Joao Correia, Gil Correia and late spouse Beatric Correia, Maria Gouveia and Aurelio Gouveia.
Maria’s visiting hours will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Her funeral will take place Tuesday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will immediately follow in St. John Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford MA.
