Maria O. Couto

New Bedford – Maria (Pereira) Couto, age 96, of Dartmouth, MA passed away on July 31, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Joao do Couto.

Maria was born in Ribeira Cha, St. Michael, Azores, Portugal and was the daughter of the late Manuel Almeida Pereira and Maria dos Anjos (Soares) Pereira.  She had moved to the United States in 1977 and went on to work for Cliftex Corp. as a presser for many years.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Michael and granddaughter, Jessica and also enjoyed spending time with her chickens.

Maria is survived by her daughter, Maria E. Mota and her husband Guilherme of N. Dartmouth and her son, John C. Couto and his wife Rosa of S. Dartmouth; as well as her grandchildren, Michael Mota and granddaughter, Jessica Couto. Her favorite saying to her grandchildren was “with God I fall asleep, with God I wake up in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit Amen.”

Maria’s visiting hour and funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home from 8:00 A.M. – 9:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John Cemetery.
