Jose Pacheco Afonso

New Bedford – Jose Pacheco Afonso, age 76, of New Bedford, MA passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness on Saturday, September 7, 2024 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Fatima (Furtado) Afonso.

Jose was born in Agua de Pau, São Miguel, Azores and was the son of the late Joaquim Tavares Afonso and Maria do Anjos Pacheco. He had worked in manufacturing his entire life, including Acushnet Company, where he had been a machine operator. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, playing the lottery. He also loved to watch soccer, especially his favorite team, Benfica and most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Fatima Afonso; children, Anna Paula Afonso, Debra Pion and her husband Andrew Pion, Steven Joe Afonso and his only grandchild, Cory Joseph Afonso. 

He was also the brother of the late Maria Amelia Barbosa and her late husband Joao Barbosa, his late half-brother, Belmerio Afonso and his late wife Maria Afonso, and his late half-sister, Fatima Botelho and her late husband Tobias Botelho.

Jose’s visiting hours and funeral services will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024. Visiting hours will take place at Perry Funeral Home from 8:30 A.M. – 9:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John Cemetery.
