Joao F. Tavares

New Bedford – Joao F. Tavares, age 73, of New Bedford, MA passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on Thursday, October 31, 2024 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria O. Tavares (Paiva).

Joao was born in São Miguel, Azores and was the son of the late Antonio Tavares and Francelina Tavares (Medeiros). He dedicated many years of his life to working at the scallop factory.

Joao had a deep love for animals, especially his cherished German Shepherds. He was passionate about landscaping and found joy in nurturing his garden, particularly his beloved roses. His dedication extended to caring for his chickens and rabbits, which brought him great happiness. He loved spending time with his only granddaughter Mariah O. Tono. An avid sports fan, Joao proudly supported his favorite soccer team, Benfica. He also treasured the time spent in front of his home, creating lasting memories and engaging in meaningful conversations with his dear friend, Senhor Joao.

He is survived by his two daughters Nelia Tavares and her ex-husband Mario A. Tono. His other daughter Sandy Tavares-Perry and her husband Jody J. Perry. His siblings Jose C. Furtado his sisters Theresa Gomes and her late husband Manuel Gomes also his other sister Maria A. Furtado. His aunt Maria Telheiro and husband Jose. Joao was the brother of the late Manuel Furtado. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and an adoptive grandson. 

Joao’s visiting hours and funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. Visiting hours will take place at Perry Funeral Home from 8:00 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. and followed by a Bilingual service to take place in the Funeral home at 10:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Cemetery in New Bedford, MA.
