Joao Chora

New Bedford – Joao Chora, age 88, of Dartmouth, MA passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on Sunday, September 8, 2024 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Maria (Fortunato) Chora, with whom he had shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.

Joao was born in São Miguel, Azores and was the son of the late Jose Chora and Estrella (Fita) Chora. He had worked decades for Gaspar’s Linguica Company and also worked as a custodian for the Dartmouth Public Schools. Up until his illness, Joao had his own little farm, which led to him being known as “Farmer John”. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Maria Chora; 2 children, Natalie Perham and her husband Jeff Perham and Antone Chora; 2 grandsons, David Paul Sequeira and Nicolaus Antone Chora; 2 great-granddaughters and 1 great-grandson; as well as his 3 sisters and 2 brothers. 

Joao’s visiting hours and funeral services will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024. Visiting hours will take place at Perry Funeral Home from 8:00 A.M. – 9:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks to consider making a donation in Joao’s Memory to the Mount Carmel Church Holy Ghost Society.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford.
