Joao S. Bairos

New Bedford – Joao Bairos, age 82, of New Bedford passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Maria (Soares) Bairos, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.

Joao was born in Almagreira, Santa Maria, Azores to the late Jose Bairos Moura and Maria Eugenia Sousa. In 1980, he came to the U.S.A. to provide a better life for his family. He was known for his hardworking ethic. Joao worked in factories, construction and landscaping until his retirement.

He had been happiest when spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. All of us will miss his stubbornness especially his dedicated and special caregivers, Maria Macedo and Helena Silva.

Joao is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maria Bairos; his daughters, Zelia Melo and spouse Ed, Nelly Furtado and spouse John, Juvenalia Bairos, Cidalia Tavares and spouse Mark and Vanda Mendonca and spouse Derek; sister, Ines Freitas of Canada; grandkids, Steve Soares, Brian Soares, Sonny Furtado, Myles Tavares, Lexie Tavares,Abbie Tavares, and Kaylin Mendonca Gavin Mendonca.

He was predeceased by his 10 brothers and sisters.

Joao’s visiting hours and funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023. Visiting hours will take place at Perry Funeral Home from 9:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
