New Bedford – Fernando P. Jacob, age 88, of Dartmouth, MA passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27th, 2024 at St. Lukes Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Mosteiros, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. The oldest of 8 children, he was the beloved son of the late John P. Jacob and Geraldina (Pacheco) Jacob. Coming to the United States at 18 years old with his father and the oldest of his sisters so that they could make a better life for their family, he worked as a cook and eventual Food Manager for S.S. Kresge/Kmart Corp. for 45 years until retirement in 1998. Post-retirement, he worked as a prep cook at The Symposium in New Bedford and Allendale Country Club in Dartmouth.
Fernando (a.k.a “Jake”) loved being outside tending to his yard and working in his garden. He was well known for always “whistling while he worked” no matter what he was doing and being willing to help anyone who needed a helping hand however he was truly most happy when he was spending quality time with his family around him.
Fernando is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Fernanda M. (Cabral) Jacob, his son Jeffrey Jacob, his daughter Pamela Jacob-Arruda and her husband Martin Arruda, all from Dartmouth, his grandchildren Amanda Jacob, Kyle Jacob, Cory Arruda, Dylan Arruda, Megan Jacob and Sarah Jacob, three great-granddaughters Jayla Coombs, Lexi Savoy, and Zoe Savoy and three of his siblings Joe Jacob, Lucy Ferreira and Marie Jean all from Fall River.
He was predeceased by his parents and four of his siblings Connie Ferreira, John Jacob, Fatima Ferreira, and Valdemar (Val) Jacob, as well as several beloved brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
Fernando’s visiting hours will be held at Perry Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 30th from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. His funeral will take place the following day, Thursday, October 31st beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 AM and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s, South Dartmouth at 10:00A.M. Burial will immediately follow at Rural Cemetery in New Bedford.
