Theodore L. “Teddy” Canto

New Bedford – Theodore L. “Teddy” Canto age 85 years died Tuesday June 7, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by the his loved ones. He was the beloved husband of Esther (Cambra) Canto of New Bedford. Theodore was the loved father of John Canto of Harwich, MA., Theodore Canto Jr. of Maryland, Benjamin Canto of Las Vegas, Nevada, Richard Canto, Mary Lee Kelsey, and Elizabeth Canto all of Harwich Ma., Karen Therrien, Lauren Fortes, Linda Moura, Lionel Sylvia all of New Bedford, Valarie Goncalves of Dartmouth and the late Byron D. Sylvia. Teddy has a sister Ruth Barboza of Falmouth, MA. He is also survived by many many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Canto was the son of the late Henry J. and Emily (Encarnacao) Canto. He was born in New Bedford; he was raised in Harwich, on Cape Cod and returned to this area in 1975.Theodore was a construction worker, bartender, and maintenance man until his retirement. Red Sox Nation lost an Avid Red Sox Fan in the passing of Teddy, he was a member of the Andrew Dahill Post V.F.W. # 1531 and a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Canto’s funeral will be Saturday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9:00 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart Parish 121 Mt. Pleasant St. at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
