Derek Anthony Vassal

Providence, R.I. – Derek Anthony Vassal, age 27 years, died Friday, June 10, 2011, at Rhode Island Hospital, unexpectedly after a motor vehicle accident. He was the son of Antonio and Lurdes (Reis) Vassal of S. Dartmouth. Derek is survived by his sister Charlene Vassal of Dartmouth, his Paternal grandmother Silvina Vassal of New Bedford, his companion Lisa Garifales of New Bedford, who is expecting their first child, Lilly Vassal, in August and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Vassal was born in New Bedford and has lived in the Dartmouth all of his life. Derek worked for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department as a correctional officer. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School where he excelled in football.

Mr. Vassal’s funeral will be Thursday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth at 10 A.M. Burial will follow at South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday evening from 5 - 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
