New Bedford- Amelia Mae (Spencer) Correia, 84, of New Bedford, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph George Correia. Mrs. Spencer Correia is survived by two daughters Laura J. wife of Joseph Vieira of New Bedford and Nadeen M. Correia-Gomes widow of Donald J.Gomes of New Bedford, two sons Anthony J. “Tony” and his wife Danae Reis of New Bedford and John S. Reis of New Bedford, her sister Herminia “Mina” Spencer Santos widow of Jack Santos of New Bedford and her brother John Spencer widower of Inez (Houtman) Spencer of New Bedford, She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and godchildren. She was the mother of the late Violetta Reis and sister of the late Manuel J. Spencer .
Mrs. Spencer Correia was born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Jose N. and Laurenca R. (Almeida) Spencer. Mrs. Spencer Correia attended and graduated from the New Bedford Public School System, she was a graduate of Morton Hospital Nursing School and was a Registered Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital for over 32 years. Mrs. Correia was a member of the St. Martin dePodres Guild, the Verdean Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, the Cape Verdean Womens Social Club, the Martha Briggs Society, the Friends of the New Bedford Elderly, the N.A.A.C.P. and the St. Jude Guild
The funeral will be Wednesday December 31, 2003 from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 A.M. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. Visiting hours are Tuesday December 30, 2003 from 4 - 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
