New Bedford – Maria P. DaCosta, age 98 years of New Bedford, died Peacefully surrounded by her family on December 9, 2010 at Sacred Heart Home. She was the widow of Edmundo DaCosta, whom she was married to for 66 years before his death in 1996. Her parents John Pereira Raposa and Albertina Gloria Norbero lived on Sao Miguel, Azores but came to America for the births of most of their children making them American Citizens

Maria was born in New Bedford, MA. In 1912 and returned to Sao Miguel at the age of 3. She married her true love Edmundo in 1930 when she was eighteen years old and soon started her family. She returned to New Bedford with her 2 sons Leonel and Edmund in 1944 and immediately went to work ensuring they lived the American dream. She was joined by her Husband sixteen months later and they went on to live happily ever after. Mrs. DaCosta worked as a skilled stitcher for various local Mills throughout the city and was widely regarded as the best of the best at her craft, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting continuing into her late nineties, an avid gardener and cook, she maintained a large garden which she supplied vegetables for weekly feasts for her ever growing family. Known as Vavo to everybody, she instantly made friends with everyone she met. Family was the most important thing to her and spoke of her devotion till the end. A teller of stories she loved life, her laugh was contagious and her character unforgettable. Survivors include her sons Leonel DaCosta and his companion Fran Turmelle of Middleboro, and Edmund DaCosta and his wife Elaine of New Bedford, 8 grandchildren , 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, a sister Regina Camara of New Bedford, she was the sister of the late Maria Couto, John Raposa and Manny Raposa.


Mrs DaCosta’s. funeral service will be on Monday at 10:30 A.M, at Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St.. Relatives and friends are invited to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. Johns Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 5-8 P.M.
