Violante (Farias) Costa

New Bedford – Violante F. (Farias) Costa, age 68 years, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Manuel S. Costa of New Bedford. Mrs. Costa was the mother of Benvinda Costa-Reedy wife of Mark Reedy and John M. Costa both of New Bedford and grandmother of Amanda and Alexander Santos both of New Bedford. Violante was a sister of Helena Goncalves and Joao Farias both of New Bedford, Maria daGloria deMello, Jaime and Jose Farias all of Canada, Resureicao Senra of St. Michael, Açores and the late Manuel Farias and Lourdes Veloso. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Costa was born in St. Michael, Açores and has lived in this area since 1966. She was a daughter of the late Joao and Violante (Tavares) Farias. She drove “Mrs. Costa’s Van” around the New Bedford area.

Mrs. Costa’s funeral will be Wednesday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday evening from 5 – 9 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Violante Costa Memorial Fund, to be used for works of mercy in her memory.
