Irene O. Simmons

New Bedford – Irene O. (Pontes) Simmons age 92 years died Thursday May 6, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital with her children by her side. She was the wife of the late Eugene F. Simmons Jr., and the loved mother of Patricia Braga of South Dartmouth, Irene Ann Ponder of Fayetteville, Georgia, Margaret Villeneuve and Lucille Deree both of New Bedford. She is also survived by 6 Grandchildren and 8 Great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of the late Joseph O. and Margaret (Soares) Pontes. She was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all her life. Irene was a Housekeeper with Francis P. Memorial Hospital, she also work as a seamstress with her sister Agnes, until she retired. She was a member of the Tuesday Club of South Dartmouth.

Mrs. Simmons’ funeral was private, in accordance with her wishes. Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery. Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St, were entrusted with her arrangements.
