Abel Inacio de Lima, 89, of Acushnet, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Born July 3, 1920 in Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal, he was the son of Joao Inacio de Lima and Maria do Carmo Flor. He married Maria Idalina Linhares de Lima, February 4, 1945. She survives at home.
Mr. de Lima was a successful businessman in Ribeira Quente, where he owned a general store and managed family land holdings in addition to serving the community as mayor and registrar of deeds, marriages, births and deaths. In 1960, he moved to New Bedford, followed in 1961 and 1962 by his family.
He retired from Cornell Dubilier Electronics, Inc., New Bedford, in 1985, and shortly thereafter moved to Acushnet. He loved gardening, home repair projects and reading. To his last days, his greatest joy was gathering his family for meals at his home.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
He is survived by his wife; six children, Noemia Pereira, New Bedford; John L. Lima and his wife, Kathryn, Sharon, PA; Abel Lima and his wife, Karen, North Dartmouth; Louis Lima and his partner, Dr. Jerome Crepeau, Provincetown; Ligia de Medeiros and her husband, Jose, Acushnet; and Aura Correia and her husband, David, Fall River; ten grandchildren, Keith Pereira; Kristy Pereira Amaral and her husband, Michael; Philip J. Lima; Jessica Lima Samson and her husband, Paul; Laura Lima Sowle and her husband, Philip; Jordan Lima; Craig de Medeiros and his wife, Sherri; Paul de Medeiros and his wife, Vanessa; Marc de Medeiros, and Sara de Medeiros; and nine great-grandchildren, Leanne Pereira, Andrew Amaral, Cheyenne Lima, John R. Lima, Cassidy Lima, Noah Sowle, Savannah Sowle, Tristan de Medeiros, and Isabelle de Medeiros.
He is also survived by three sisters, Aura Roque and Gloria Rego of Sao Miguel, Acores, and
Norbina Linhares of Dartmouth.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Antonio de Lima of Sao Miguel and John Lima, New Bedford; and four sisters, Adelina Souza, New Bedford, Maria Rego, Dartmouth, Libania Peixoto, Montreal, Canada, and Francelina Rapoza, New Bedford.
Mr. de Lima’s funeral will be Saturday October 10th. from the Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 A.M.
Family and friends are invited. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday evening from 4-8 P.M.
