New Bedford - Eugene “Gene” P. Sylvia, aged 98 years, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. He was the loving husband of the late Katherine (Almeida) Sylvia. He is survived by his longtime friend, companion, and caregiver, Rose Costa of New Bedford, brother Leonard "Lenny" Sylvia of New Bedford and his special granddaughter, Bobbi Jean Sylvia-Schutt of N. Carolina. He was the brother of the late Laura Carreiro and Alice Rego. Mr. Sylvia was the father of Richard Sylvia of Florida, Roland Sylvia of Mississippi, Ryan Sylvia of New Jersey and Frances Chartier of Fairhaven. Mr. Sylvia is also survived by several grand, great-grand and great-great grand children and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sylvia, was a son of the late Joseph and Antonia (Swartz) Sylvia. He was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all of his life, of which he had spent the last 2 years at Alden Court Nursing Home. Mr. Sylvia was a retired truck driver for Hemingway Transportation. He was a former member of YMCA, the American Legion Post #459 and the American Portuguese War Veterans. Mr. Sylvia was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran.
In accordance with his wishes he was cremated.
Memorial Services will take place at 1 P.M. at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., on Saturday, June 27th, visitation beginning at 12:45 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
Burial of his cremains will be at Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne, MA. at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
