New Bedford- Louis N. Lopes age 88 years died Saturday, after a long illness at Sacred Heart Home with his daughter by his side. He was the husband of the late Mildred (Roderick) Lopes and the father of Sheila I. Davis and her husband Gordon J. of New Bedford and Deborah Hart and her husband Kevin of Roxbury. Mr. Lopes was the grandfather of Brianna Lynn Davis and Jadynn Marie Davis, Shavonne Hart and Janaya Hart. Louis was the brother of Freeman Lopes of Mattapan, Benjamin “Benny” Lopes of Everett, and the late Manuel “Lefty”, Joseph, Francisco “Frank”, Edward “Da Da”, Norman, Antone Lopes, Aurora Barros, and Anna Margaret Alves. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends who will surely miss him.
Mr. Lopes was the son of the late Nicolas M. and Margaret (Spencer) Lopes. He was a lifelong New Bedford resident. He worked as an assembler at Chamberlain Mfg. until his retirement. Louis was a Decorated U. S. Army Veteran of World War II (Pacific Theater). He was a former member of the Cape Verdean Ultramarine Band Club, the United Social Club and the Cape Verdean Veterans Hall. Louis loved music, especially jazz and would often be seen dancing at one of the for-mentioned clubs, until his illness no longer allowed him to do so.
Mr. Lopes’s services will be Thursday at 10:30 A.M. from the Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. Services to start at 11 A.M. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 6-9 P.M.
