New Bedford - Charles X. Mesquita Sr., age 90, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the widower of Mary R. (Aguiar) Mesquita. They were married for over 62 years. He was the brother of Mary Weigel of New Bedford, Rose Seifert of Marion, Eleanor Mesquita of Dennis, Theresa Mesquita of Yarmouth, Theodore Mason of Oklahoma and the late Nestor, John and Thomas Mesquita, Cecilia Oliveira, Louise Tetrault and Laura Wood. Mr. Mesquita is also survived by 9 godchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mesquita was born in New Bedford, son of the late Charles X. and Lauriana (Bettencourt) Mesquita. He lived most of his life in Dartmouth. A WWII Army veteran; he served in the Pacific theater where he earned a Bronze Medal.
Mr. Mesquita was a retired bricklayer and a life member of Local 03. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, playing trivial pursuit and poker. He loved feeding and watching the birds in his yard.
Mr. Mesquita’s Funeral is from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. on Friday at 9 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Julie Billiart Church at 10 A.M. Burial is at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 5 - 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
