Helen (Itskowitz) Signer, 89, of New Bedford passed away in the early morning of Wednesday, December 17th at the Royal of Fairhaven. She was born March 5, 1919 in Manhattan, New York City, the daughter of the late Abraham and Frieda (Wasserman) Itskowitz.
Helen lived all her life in New York City until July of this year. She loved the city and its cultural attractions, frequenting libraries & museums and attending concerts, the theater, art shows and foreign film screenings. She was an avid reader of books about history, nature, psychology, and Judaism.
In her later years she took several Adult Education courses at Brooklyn College. She was proud of her immigrant parents, and had their names inscribed on the Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.
As a freethinker she wanted no rites or ceremonies to mark her passing except to be remembered as an intelligent, cultured, caring, & giving person.
She was predeceased by her sister Esther Selzer and brother Harry Lawrence.
She is survived by her daughter, Devora Belilove of Fairfield, Iowa, her son, M Scott Signer & his wife Debra of Fairhaven, and several nieces & nephews.
