New Bedford, Donald C. Whelan, aged 81 years, died May 17th, at The Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the loving husband of Muriel (Goguen) Whelan of Freetown, they were married for 62 years. He was the father of Sandra Whelan who is married to Bill McGann of Raynham and Daniel who is married to Diane Whelan of Freetown. He was grandfather of Matthew, Angela, Craig and Jacob. He was the brother of the late Paul Whelan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Whelan was a son of the late James and Elizabeth (Craig) Whelan. He was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all of his life.
Mr. Whelan was a retired Fire Fighter for the City of New Bedford. He also worked at Pine Grove Pharmacy for 32 years, was a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Bernard’s Church, was a member of the Massachusetts Permanent Fireman's Benefit Association for 44 years, loved playing Santa at Christmas time for the children and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW II.
In accordance with his wishes he was cremated.

A Mass of Christian Burial with ashes present will be Saturday May 24th at St. Bernard Church 32 South Main St. Assonet at 10 A.M.Relatives and friends are invited to meet the family at Church at 9:30 A.M. Burial of cremains will be done at a later date at the convenience of the family.
