New Bedford, MA.-Joseph G. Mello age 66 died Sugust 2, 2007 at home after a brief struggle with cancer. He was the husband of Clarinda M. (Aldelino) Mello. He was the father of Joel P. Mello of Acushnet, Nicholas J. Mello, and Ian L. Mello both of New Bedford, and the late Angela S. Mello. He was the grandfather of Amanda J Mello of New Bedford, Brittany M. Mello and Tyler J. Mello both of Acushnet. He was the great-grandfather of Kaden. He was the brother of John L. Mello of New Bedford.
Mr. Mello was the son of the late Leopold and Alice Mello. He was born in New Bedford and lived in this area most of his life.
Joseph earned his masters in Counseling Psychology from Assumption College. Among his many professional achievements, he worked as a Crisis-Adjustment Counselor at New Bedford High School and Falmouth High School; at the Department of Mental Health as a case manager, at the Department of Social Services as a social worker; as well as the Director of the Marion Center for Human Services Inc. the Drug Abuse Rehabilitation Center at the Dorchester Mental Health Center, and the Outpatient Drug-Free Day Program at the New Bedford Mental Health Clinic.
Truly, a man who touched each and every life who he came into contact with, his passions included working with youth, coaching football, attending athletic events of his children and grandchildren, telling stories, and jokes to friends and family, fishing(especially digging for quahogs), and drawing.
His funeral will be Monday August 6, 2007 from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. James Parish, on County St. New Bedford at 10 A.M. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4-7 P.M. In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Joseph G. Mello Memorial Scholarship Fund at First Citizens Federal Credit Union.
