New Bedford – Evangeline “Vangie” (Fermino/ Freeman) Blake passed away at the Taber Street Nursing Home on Thursday, August 31, 2006, lovingly surrounded by members of her family. The widow of Joseph Miett Blake, Sr., she would have celebrated her 93rd birthday on September 26. She is survived by 4 sons Alden Windsong Blake of Lakeville, Joseph Blake Jr and his friend James Manant of New Bedford, Richard Blake and his wife Norma of Falmouth and Daniel Blake and his wife Bertha of Oak Bluffs. 2 daughters Helen Blake of Falmouth and Dawn Blake Souza and her husband Joseph of Dartmouth. She was also the mother of the late Robert Blake, Norman Blake, Cynthia Coblyn and Doreen Almeida. Other survivors include 41 grandchildren 66 great grand and 11 great great grand and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of Alfredo Fermino of Florida, Ruth Holland of Providence, R.I. and Lillian Stallings of New Bedford and the late Antonio, Henry, Joseph, Peter, Valentino Jr. and Jaime Fermino, and Anna Rogers and Mary Gomes- Johnson.
Mrs. Blake was the daughter of the last whaleman, Valentino Fermino and Dominga Fortes Fermino and took great pride in her Cape Verdean heritage.. She was born in New Bedford. Mrs. Blake was employed for many yrs as a nurses aide at St. Lukes Hospital and Falmouth Hospital, where she spent more than 25 yrs working in labor and delivery. After retiring in 1974, she enjoyed vacationing with family and friends in Bermuda,Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Hawaii, and especially loved spending time in Texas and Arizona.
Mrs. Blake funeral will be at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., Tuesday at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 A.M.
