New Bedford – Joao A. Silva passed away April 8th at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Joao was preceded by his wife of 53 years Maria C. Silva.
Joao worked in the fishing industry most of his life. He was the owner and skipper of the FV Senhora da Boa Viagem. João was also a devoted Benfica fan. His one regret will be that he will not around to see his beloved Benfica win the championship this year.
Joao is survived by sons, John Silva and his wife Lizette Silva of Dartmouth Alberto Silva and his wife Kristine Silva of Fairhaven; daughters, Clara Medeiros and her husband David Medeiros of New Bedford and Rosa Potter and her husband Joe Potter of New Bedford; grandchildren, Kennedy Silva, Meredith Silva, John Matthew Silva, James Silva, Brayden Medeiros, Aiden Potter and Avery Potter and two step-grandchildren, Trevor Golenski and Corey Medeiros.
He is also survived by siblings, Arthur Silva of New Bedford, Fernando Silva from Salvaterra de Magos, Portugal, Deolinda Caseiro also from New Bedford and Jose Silva of New Bedford.
Joao is also preceded by his father, Arthur Silva and his mother, Rosa Oliveira Silva and a sister, Maria das Flores Silva. There are also several nieces and nephews.
Joao’s visiting hours will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. His funeral will take place Thursday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will immediately follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
