John A. Lopes, Jr.

New Bedford – John A. Lopes Jr., age 77, of New Bedford passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at home with his loving family by his side.

John was born in New Bedford, MA, to the late Grace (Barros) and John A. Lopes. He had worked at the Veteran’s House as a cook, a custodian at Coastline Elderly, the food bank at P.A.C.E. and proudly served in the U.S. Army.

He absolutely loved umpiring at the Dias Baseball field, playing pool and cards, cooking, listening to all types of music, was known as a “Gorilla” not only on the playing field but throughout life. He loved to walk and would talk to everyone that he crossed paths with, and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

John is survived by his children, Jason Almeida, Alysia Almeida, Nathan Almeida and Jody Lopes; grandchildren, Damian Jenkins, Darea Medeiros, Kwali Jenkins, Shaquane Almeida and Dyirese Almeida; great-grandchildren, Carnell Jenkins, Levi Howard and Makhai Almeida. He is also survived by his siblings, Antone Lopes, Barbara Afonso, Lisa Lopes, Dwayne Lopes and Paul Lopes; niece, Jakia Lopes and many well-loved nieces, nephews, as well as aunts and uncles.

He was also the brother of the late Rosanna Lopes.

John’s visiting hours will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2022 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Cremation to follow.
