Robert Cairns

d. November 1, 2022

New Bedford - On Tuesday Nov 1, 2022, Robert J Cairns, 85, beloved husband and loving brother, uncle, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully with family at his side.

Robert was born on July 11,1937 in New Bedford MA to the late Martin P Cairns and Emily (Perry) Cairns. Upon graduating from New Bedford High School in 1955, Robert proudly served his country for 4 years and remained a proud United States Marine for the rest of his life! Because Robert insisted on doing things his way, it was only natural that he would run his own business. He established J&L Contracting of New Bedford and worked as a carpenter until he retired.

He was the beloved husband of the late Palmeda F. (Thomas) Cairns. Together they lived a happy life full of love. He enjoyed his family and was a loyal brother to his siblings, the late Martin Cairns of New Bedford and sister Barbara E. (Cairns) Cassidy and Stephen J Cassidy Jr of Fairhaven. He was a wonderful uncle to Stephen J Cassidy III, Christopher M. Cassidy, the late Michael P. Cassidy and Maureen G (Cassidy) Missey and had numerous great nieces and nephews. He was step father to Cheryl A Grundy. Robert was especially proud of his title “Grandpa” and focused much of his time, love and passions with his grandsons Justin W. Grundy of Assonet and Ross A. Pacheco of Middleboro. He was thrilled to earn the title Great Grandpa to Matthew Robert Grundy.

Robert enjoyed hunting, anything outdoors and woodworking, often creating keepsakes for those he loved. He will be missed and remembered fondly.

Arrangements are placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. New Bedford, MA 02740. Please see our website: www.perryfuneral.com for condolences.
