Encarnação S. (Da Silva) Matos

New Bedford –Encarnação S. (Da Silva) Matos, age 91, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth. She was the beloved wife of the late Julio Matos.

Encarnação was born in Figueira da Foz, Portugal and was the beloved daughter of the late Augusto Maligno and Maria Rodrigues. She had worked at both Gordon’s and Capeway Seafood and also had worked as a seamstress.

Encarnação enjoyed sewing, embroidering and cooking. She also loved sharing stories of the past about life experiences, family, Portugal and traditions. Encarnação was a great storyteller, remembering many facts in amazing detail even in her later years. Most of all, she loved spending time with family, summers in Figueira da Foz and her must-have afternoon cup of coffee with a little something sweet, especially when accompanied by friends or loved ones sitting at her own kitchen table.

She is survived by her daughters, Laura M. Grilo and her husband Manuel, Milena Rodrigues and her husband Nelson; grandson, John Evangelista and his companion Stephanie Lira; granddaughters, Andrea Grilo and her husband John, Maia Rodrigues and Leila Rodrigues; great-granddaughter, Adriana Evangelista; brother, Jose Augusto Maligno and his wife Lourdes; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, the late Linda Melo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. All attendees are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be private.
