New Bedford – Januario C. de Melo, age 78, of New Bedford, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his wife, daughter and son. He was the beloved husband of Maria Natalia (Estacio Costa) de Melo.
Januario was born in Faja de Baixo, São Miguel, Açores to the late Virgilio C. Melo and Ana de Lima. He worked at AFC Cable until the age of retirement and was a long-time dedicated musician for the Our Lady of Angels Band. During his retirement, you would find him walking the neighborhood, working on his vegetable garden, tending to the grape vine and creating things from wood in the shed. His smile was contagious and would light up any room he entered.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Maria Natalia de Melo; his daughter, Sandra Davis and her husband Robert Davis; his son, Jesse de Melo and his grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Olga Cardozo and brother, João de Melo; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his late siblings, Natalia Brilhante, Jacinto de Melo, Manuel Lima, Clementina Carreiro, José Luis de Melo and Jaime de Melo.
Januario’s visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. His funeral will take place Thursday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
