Osvaldo Cunha Jose

Fairhaven – Osvaldo Cunha Jose, 87, of New Bedford, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Royal of Fairhaven. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria (Luis) Jose.

Osvaldo was born on the island of Graciosa, in Azores, Portugal, to the late Manuel da Cunha Jose and Maria Alzira da Silva. He spent much of his adult life in South Africa, as a restaurateur and construction supervisor, among other occupations. In retirement, he lived in the North End of New Bedford. Despite little formal schooling, he was an extremely well-read, articulate, compassionate man and always an eloquent advocate of human rights and social justice.

He is survived by his 5 children, Isidro Cunha, Carlos Cunha, Rui Jose, Gil Cunha and Arminda Cunha Silva; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Osvaldo’s funeral arrangements were private.
