New Bedford – Thomas Perkins, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, 3 days after his 80th birthday at New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. He was the beloved Husband of Lynda Perkins.
Tom was born in Newport, Rhode Island and lived in the Westport area for Most of his life.
He graduated from UMASS with a Masters in Textiles. After working in that industry for a few years, he opened Cuffee’s Bookcase in Westport. His passion for boats steered him toward starting Perkins’ Boat Co. and he built X21 sailboats. He was also a Selectman in Westport in the early 1990’s.
Before retiring he worked as an organizer for MASS Senior Action. He volunteered for Movable Feast in Fall River for many years. Tom was an active member of Westport Fishermen’s Association and built many kayaks and paddle boards plus a canoe which were raffled off.
He did thus with his close friend Jack Reynolds, together they also volunteered to speak to Westport students about boat building. He also developed a love for Marquetry and made many tables for his family. Tom was a quiet, talented soul and he will truly be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his siblings Beverley Belli and Robert Perkins both of Naples, FL.
