Dartmouth – Maria Isabel (Cabral) Ribeiro, age 84, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, March 14, 2021. She was born in Lagoa, Sao Miguel, Acores and came to the United States in 1953. She was a longtime resident of South Dartmouth.
She was the daughter of the late Jose deMedeiros Cabral and Maria Isabel Cabral, and the wife of the late Joseph Ribeiro. She was pre-deceased by her older brothers, Hermano, Arnoldo, Raul, and Albert Cabral. She is survived by her siblings, Lilia Cabral, Joseph Cabral, Edward Cabral, and Donna Branco, as well as over a dozen nieces and nephews, in particular, Kristin Brillant and Ann Cardaci, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was known to all of them as Aunt Mary and/or "Tia Maria".
Maria worked for many years as a stitcher in local garment factories. In retirement, along with her sister, Lilia, she sewed and donated nearly a thousand dresses, shirts and shorts to the children of Haiti following the 2010 earthquake there. She belonged to many local organizations, including the Rod and Gun Club of New Bedford, Mt. Carmel Seniors and Dartmouth Seniors where she assisted with the sewing classes. She enjoyed gardening, hunting with her late husband, and entertaining her family with amateur palm readings. She will be lovingly remembered for sending a greeting card by postal mail for every holiday and occasion.
Maria’s visiting hours will be held on Thursday evening, March 18, 2021 from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Her funeral will take place Friday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M.
