New Bedford – Elena DeSousa, 82, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Antonio Sousa, who rests in Venezuela.
Elena was born in Povoacao, Sao Miguel, Portugal to the late Maria and Ernesto Cardoso. She was the sister of the late Franklin Cardoso of Venezuela. Elena lived in Venezuela for over 20 years before emigrating to New Bedford, MA with her four children to seek a better future for her family. Elena enjoyed every moment spent with her family and expressed her love through her delicious cooking. She enjoyed walking with friends, gardening, and most of all, helping others. She will be remembered for her courage, kindness, love, her quick wittedness, as well as her many funny stories.
She is survived by her son, Antonio Sousa and his wife Amelia of Dartmouth, daughter, Fatima Peixoto and her husband Fernando of Dartmouth, daughter, Maria Michalski and her husband Michael of Dartmouth, son, Octavio Sousa and his wife Hilaria of New Bedford; her six grandchildren, Jessica, Alicia, Cristal, Alex, Juliana and Adriano and two great-grandchildren, Henry and Ben; her sister, Natalia Camacho of Venezuela, sister, Rosa Cardoso of New Bedford, brother, Gil Cardoso of New Bedford and sister, Mary Cardoso of Dartmouth; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Elena’s visiting hours will be held on Friday evening, January 29, 2021 from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M at Perry Funeral Home. Her funeral will be held Saturday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Cemetery.

All attendees are required by current mandated restrictions to wear a face covering at all times, to social distance 6 feet and to please refrain from any close physical contact. Attendance in the funeral home will be limited in order to meet the mandated capacity restrictions and could result with a wait time outside of the funeral home.
