New Bedford – João Sousa Duarte, age 76, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Fatima (Pimentel) Duarte.
Born in Ponta Delgada, St. Michael, Azores, he was the son of the late Jordão Duarte and Carmelia Duarte. He had been employed at AFC Cable Company until his retirement.
He loved to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren that he loved and adored. João had such a generous and loving heart and was always ready to help anyone and everyone.
He enjoyed watching soccer and was a big fan of FC Porto. His grandchildren used to call him “Mr. Fix It” as there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t repair. He was loved by so many and will be missed dearly.
João’s survivors include his wife, Fatima; his children, Paul Duarte and his wife Helena Duarte of new Bedford and Nelia Duarte Cardoso and her husband David Cardoso of Dartmouth; his grandchildren, Paul Duarte Jr., Mia Duarte and Christian Duarte all of New Bedford and Ava Cardoso and Lea Cardoso of Dartmouth.
He is also survived by his siblings, Lilliana Martins of Dartmouth, Victor Duarte and his wife Delfina of Dartmouth, Alberto Duarte of New Bedford, Eduardo Duarte and his wife Teresa of New Jersey, Luisa Arruda and her husband Armando of Canada, Mario Duarte and his wife Maria of New Bedford and Expo Duarte of New Bedford; as well as several godchildren, nieces and nephews.
João’s visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 27, 2020 from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. His funeral will take place on Monday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Church Dartmouth. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
All attendees are required by current mandated restrictions to wear a face covering at all times, to social distance 6 feet and to please refrain from any close physical contact. Attendance in the funeral home will be limited in order to meet the mandated capacity restrictions and could result with a wait time outside of the funeral home. Attendance in church and at the cemetery will also be limited to meet capacity restrictions. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this time.
