New Bedford – Lourenco Eurico Lopes, age 80, of New Bedford passed away on May 7, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital. The son of the late Gloria Lopes and Eurico da Piedade.
Born on New Year’s Day in 1940 in Figueira da Foz, Portugal he was the beloved husband of Maria de Lourdes Lopes and the loving father of Gloria Lopes, Luis Lopes, and Lourdes Lopes.
He started working as a mechanics teacher at 19 years old at the vocational high school in Figueira. He then moved to Mozambique with his family where he remained for 12 years. When he came to the United States in 1980 with his wife and three children he worked as a fisherman. He then became a cook and bartender at the Fisherman’s Club in New Bedford.
Lourenco loved to cook feijoada, caril, and pasteis de bacalhau. He also loved to garden, often bringing fruits and vegetables to neighbors and friends. He could watch futebol for hours upon end, especially when Sporting was playing, his favorite team. He always loved to be outside and take long walks by the ocean. He was his happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He is a beautiful soul that touched the lives of all who knew him. He will forever be missed and loved by his family and friends and his memory will live on through them.
He is survived by his wife, Maria de Lourdes Lopes; his children, Gloria, Luis, and Lourdes; his grandchildren, Samantha Marcalo Dawson, Cassandra Marcalo, Luis Marcalo, Leandra Soares, and Karina Soares; and his two great-grandchildren, Jayden Dawson and Jianna Dawson.
Lourenco’s funeral services will be private due to the recent mandated restrictions in regards to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
