AMARINO FRANCO TAVARES


New Bedford – Amarino Franco Tavares, age 82, passed away surrounded by his family on February 27, 2019. He is the loving husband of Judite (Coutinho) Tavares, and the son of the late Maria Eliza Tavares and Jose Tavares.

He was born on September 21, 1936 in Ribeira Grande, St. Michael, Azores, where he lived until he joined the Portuguese army. He was later stationed in Mozambique where he met his wife Judite, of 54 years. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1976 and proudly became a citizen in 1983. He worked at Polaroid for 22 years in New Bedford.

Amarino was passionate about soccer and jogging but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Surviving are his children Carla Farias of New Bedford, Marina Tavares of Taunton, and Joseph Michael Tavares and wife Lenore of New Bedford; his grandchildren, Teryn Catherine Gianunzio and her husband Robert of New Bedford, Joshua (Joshinha) Michael Morgado and his wife Nilia of New Bedford, Brandon Farias and his wife Amber of New Bedford, Aaron Farias of New Bedford and Chloe Ann (Chloicas) Morgado of Taunton; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie Marie Farias and Sebastian Farias.

He also leaves behind a brother, Joseph Michael Tavares and his wife Carol from California.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
