Jose F. Pacheco

New Bedford - Jose F Pacheco, age 74, passed away at his home in New Bedford, surrounded by his family and friends on Sunday, February 24, 2019 after a battle with cancer. He was born on October 29, 1944 in Ribiera Quente on the island of Sao Miguel, Acores to Francisco and Maria (Xavier) Pacheco.

Jose was predeceased by his compassionate wife Maria (Rego) Pacheco. Together they had five children: Teri Rumble and her husband Danny of FL, Sandra Pacheco of FL, Kathy Czerwiec and her husband Daniel of Agawam, Jose Pacheco Jr. of GA and Brian Pacheco of New Bedford. He enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren Lainey and Marin Czerwiec.

He was survived by 2 siblings Honorato Pacheco and Rosa Vila, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jose was also the brother of the late Maria da Conceicao Pine, Maria da Encarnacao Leite and Tiago Pacheco.

Jose often reminisced of his time in the Portuguese army while he was stationed in Mozambique. He worked as a farmer and commercial fisherman in New Bedford after immigrating to the United States. He was a hard worker and spent most of his years on the Sao Paulo and Sao Marcos vessels. He retired back to the island of Sao Miguel and enjoyed gardening, cooking, making wine, woodworking, driving around in his red VW Beetle, visiting with family and friends and telling stories about his cat “my Tita”.

His visiting hours will be held Wednesday, February 27th from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. His funeral will be Thursday February 28th beginning in the funeral home, at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian burial to begin at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will immediately follow in St. John Cemetery.
