New Bedford-Humberto da Silva Fernandes died unexpectedly Friday December 23, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Maria Gabriela (Arruda) Fernandes. They were married for 33 years. He is also survived by Susana Smith and her husband Al of New Jersey, Elizabeth Fernandes and her fiancé Joseph Garcia of South Dartmouth, Linda Fernandes of Wareham, Josette Fernandes and Jessica Fernandes both of New Bedford, Rodney Fernandes and his wife lOLLY of New Bedford, and Joshua Fernandes and his wife Erika of New Bedford; his stepmother Capitolina Fernandes of Fall River, and a son-in-law, John Rodgers of Marion. He was the father of the late Phyllis Rogers and Victor Fernandes. He also had 11 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was the brother of Eddie Fernandes, Victor Fernandes, Joao Fernandes, Lourdes Paulo, Filomena De Jesus and Zelia Silva. He was the brother of the late Irondina Fernandes, Manuel S. Fernandes, Jose Fernandes, and Antonio Fernandes. He had several nieces and nephews, and also leaves behind many beloved family members, and friends.

Mr. Fernandes was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Silva) Fernandes. He was born in Mosteiros, Sao Miguel, Azores. He has live in the United States since 1956. He has lived in New Bedford for many years. He was an internationally renowned artist who was most famous for his marine art and landscapes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday December 27, 2005 at 11 A.M. at St. Lawrence Church. Visiting hour Tuesday morning from 9:30-10:30 A.M.
