New Bedford – Ilda Cabral (de Medeiros) DeMelo, age 86, of Plymouth and formerly of South Dartmouth, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Sacred Heart Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitative Care. She was the beloved wife of the late Daniel DeMelo and the daughter of the late Manuel Jose and Maria de Medeiros.
Ilda was born in Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores and had worked as a stitcher for 30 years. She was a part of the ILGWU. Ilda loved cooking and made delicious sweet bread and malasadas. She also enjoyed crocheting amazing table cloths, doilies and scarves.
She is survived by her 3 children, Gabriel DeMelo and his wife, Brenda, Daniel DeMelo and his wife, Stella and Carmen Garte and her husband, Daniel; 5 grandchildren, Carlie DeMelo, Erik DeMelo, Larissa DeMelo, Kasey DeMelo and Allegra DeMelo; 1 great-grandchild, Emma DeMelo; sister, Tecla Lima. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Maria Rita de Medeiros, Jorge Medeiros and Jose Cabral.
Ilda’s visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Her funeral will be Thursday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. and followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M.. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
