New Bedford – Charles “Chuck” Ferreira, age 91, of Solemar of South Dartmouth formerly of Schofield St. New Bedford passed away on Friday, September 29, 2018. He was born in New Bedford .He was the husband of the late Irene (Gauthier) Ferreira and son of the late Antonio and Maria Catherina (Amaral) Ferreira. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Mr. Ferreira was graphic arts Inspector for Good Year Tire and Rubber Co. retiring in 1985. He was active in Democratic Politics most of his life. Mr. Ferreira was a former Chairman of the New Bedford Democratic City Committee and served as President of the New Bedford and Cape Cod Labor Council, and President of the URW Local 290. He served as a member of the New Bedford Council on aging and advisory board. He was formerly a Dartmouth Town Meeting member. Mr. Ferreira served in the U.S. Navy during world war II. He was Stationed in Pensacola Florida at the U.S. Naval Air Station as a plane Captian, and is a life member of the American Legion Post One and served as a member of the New Bedford Board of Assesors. He was the first Deputy Sheriff appointed bySherrif David Nelson as a process server in the Civil Division for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office for 16 Years. He was a member of the Portuguese American Police Association and the New Bedford Revolver and Rifle Club. He was also a member of the Good Year Seniors. He loved going on one day trips to Foxwoods Casion an enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots He was a member of the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society and a Ziterion member.

He is survived by 2 sons: Kenneth of New Bedford and Charles Jr. and his wife Michelle of Acushnet;2 granddaughters: Audrey Moschella of Norton, MA and Erica Chevalier of New Bedford;brother: Joseph Ferreira of New Bedford as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late James and Francis Ferreira.
Charles’ visiting hours will be held on Monday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. His funeral will be Tuesday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Charles’ name to the Make a Wish Foundation.
