New Bedford – On Saturday, April 28th, Luis F. Bilhano of New Bedford passed away at his home, surrounded by his family. The beloved husband of Irene Pata Bilhano, Luis was born in Cova, Figueira da Foz, Portugal on March 14, 1938. He was the son of the late Leonor Marques Fidalgo and Jose Bilhano; brother to the late Manuel Fidalgo Bilhano; and grandfather of the late Anita Fidalgo.
At the age of 16 Luis started his journey at sea. He travelled to many beautiful locations, and for nearly 50 years, dedicated his career to commercial fishing. Following retirement, Luis spent much of his time with friends at The United Fisherman's Club, watching his favorite soccer team, Sporting. He would spend summers at his home in Portugal with his beloved wife. He was happiest when spending time with his family, especially his great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Luis Fidalgo and his partner Isabel, and Joao Fidalgo and his wife Rosa, all of New Bedford; his grandchildren, Ana Thompson and her husband Charles, and Linda Fidalgo and her fiancee Michael Mello; his great-grandchildren, Charlie, Adella, and Helen; his brother, Joao Luis Bilhano and his wife Rosa; and several nieces and nephews.
His visiting hours will be held at Perry Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 between the hours of 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Luis’ funeral will be on Thursday at 9:30 A.M. with a funeral mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will take place in Rural Cemetery.
