Jose Francisco Fangueiro died peacefully at home on November 22, 2017 surrounded by his adoring family after valiantly fighting the battle of his life against cancer with grace, dignity and quiet courage. He is survived by his loving wife, Marcolina Gomes da Silva Pereira, his daughter Alice Fangueiro, his daughter Bridget Fangueiro and her family, husband Manuel Magalhaes and their two daughters, Sophia Brielle and Leah Elizabeth Magalhaes, as well as two beloved dogs – truly man’s best friends – Lola and Stella. His sister, brothers, nieces and nephews are also a loving part of a tight-knit family that will miss him dearly.
Born in Matosinhos, Portugal on October 21, 1945, Jose was a lifelong sailor, immigrating to the United States in 1974 with his beautiful wife, Marcolina, and embarking on a successful career as a commercial fisherman out of New Bedford, MA. Diligent and hardworking, Jose went on to build his family-owned fishing business with great pride and was a respected member of the New Bedford fishing community until his retirement in 2011.
His daughters remember him as a strong, brave man with a gentle soul – a man of few words, but whose beautiful green eyes spoke volumes about the love, commitment and joy he had for his family. He was Alice and Bridget’s hero. To all those who knew him, Jose leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and integrity, a wonderful reminder of all his spirit embodied. The memories he has left behind are cherished and will always stand as a testament to the man he was – kind, generous, special. We are grateful every day to have seen his bright smile and for the life lessons he imparted.
