New Bedford – Helen Brown, age 94 of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday August 3, 2016 at Sacred Heart Home. She was the loving wife of the late Harold “Brownie” Brown and the daughter of the late Josef and Josephine Mieszkalski.
Born in South Plainfield, NJ, Helen spent most of her life in this area. She worked for Cornell-Dubillier when she first came to this area and then was the owner of Brownies Tavern, she then worked as a Bookkeeper for the City of New Bedford and also for Silverstein’s part time, as a cahsier for 25 years. After her retirement, Mrs. Brown also volunteered at Hathaway Manor Nursing Home. Helen was known throughout the area for her Friday clam boils and enjoyed weekends on the family boat on Cutty Hunk with the family.
Her surviving family include a son: John H. Brown of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren: Sarah Ober, Abigail Wolfgram and Rebecca Ober; and 2 great – grandchildren, Sebastian and Stella Wolfgram; 2 siblings – Anna Bozek and Eleanor Kaufman, both of New Jersey; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Ober, grandson, Curtis J. Doherty and 6 siblings: Stanley, Joseph, Agnes, Irene, Frances and Rosie
Her funeral will be Monday at 10:45A.M. with a service to begin at 11:45 A.M. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to The Polish National Home. The Brown family would also like to thank the staff of the Sacred Heart Home for their compassionate care of Helen.
