NEW BEDFORD — Aldemiro deSimas Machado of New Bedford, passed away Tuesday, July 5 2016. He was born on November 14, 1935 in Sao Caetano, Pico, Acores, the son of the late Clodomiro and Candida deSimas Machado. He was a parishioner of Mount Carmel church in New Bedford.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Maria J. Evangelho Machado. He is survived by his three children, Rui Machado of New Bedford, Nancy C. Greiner of Grand Haven, Michigan and Nelson Machado of Dartmouth. He is also survived by a brother Manuel deSimas Melo, a sister Estela deSimas Nunes, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Aldemiro began life as a whaler at the age of 13 and was recognized by the New Bedford Whaling Museum as one of the last surviving Whalers from the Azores. He served in the Portuguese Army in Mozambique and Angola. He worked in the Tuna fishing industry throughout the Azores until migrating with his wife and oldest son to the United States in July of 1968. Upon arriving in the United States, he worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing and American Flexible Conduit until his retirement in 1995.
He was known for his love of gardening, wine making, fishing and reminiscing of days gone by. Always eager to lend a helping hand, he made himself available for others; especially his family.
His memory will live on in our hearts. He is deeply loved and missed.
His funeral will be Saturday beginning in the funeral home at 8:45 A.M. with a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in New Bedford at 9:45 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
