New Bedford – Edward A. Sylvia III, age 94, of Autumn Glen, Dartmouth, formerly of Russell Mills Road, passed away on Thursday December 24, 2015 at The Oaks. He was the beloved husband of Stella (Amaral) Sylvia and the son of the late Edward A. Sylvia Jr., and Mary Piedade (Pacheco) Sylvia.

Edward was a World War II Navy Veteran having been awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (1 star), Philippine Liberation Medal (1 star), and Good Conduct Medal.

He was a family man who was a gifted machinist, as well as a cabinet maker and accomplished gardener. He worked in the fishing industry with his father after returning home from war. He later worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a spreader from 1956 to 1971 and also worked as a school bus driver and transportation supervisor for New Bedford Public Schools from 1971 to 1984.

His family includes his wife, Stella of North Dartmouth; daughter, Susan Fournier and spouse Daniel of North Dartmouth; sons, Paul Sylvia and spouse Dr. Mary Louise Francis of Acushnet and North Dartmouth, and David Sylvia and spouse Dr. Clifford Wood of Fall River; grandchildren, Jason Fournier and his spouse Joyce (Joey), Adam Sylvia, and Erin Sylvia; and great-grandson, Danny Fournier.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Autumn Glen, as well as Ed’s excellent team of personal caregivers who so lovingly attended to him and provided great comfort during his years of declining health.

Mr. Sylvia’s funeral will be on Wednesday beginning at the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday morning from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M prior to the Funeral Mass. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, MA.
