Dartmouth - Bernardino "Fadista" Fortunato, 90, of South Dartmouth, passed away at home, Saturday, January 29, 2005, surrounded by his family after a brief illness . He was the loving husband of the late Maria (Cimbrom) Fortunato, father of Mary (his caregiver) and her husband Joao Chora of South Dartmouth, Fernanda and her husband Jesse Luiz of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Bernardino and his wife Nancy Fortunato of Fairhaven. He was the brother Jose deSouza of Toronto, Canada. Mr. Fortunato was the father of the late John Fortunato, grandfather of the late Madeline Luiz and brother of the late Lydia Benevides
Mr. Fortunato was born in Lagoa, St. Michael, Azores, son of the late Joao and Alexandra Fadista and immigrated to the United States in 1957 and had resided in South Dartmouth since then. Mr. Fortunato worked at Berkshire Hathaway Mills as a cloth cutter until his retirement. He was an advid gardener who was known as having a green thumb & will always be remembered for the sharing of his garden's fruits with all of his neighbors.
Mr. Fortunato's will be held Tuesday, February 1, 2005 from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 A.M. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery in New Bedford . Family and friends are invited to attend Visiting hours on Monday January 31, 2005 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
