Helen Banks

Helen (Cabeca) Banks, age 78, died in her home December 25, 2014, after a
long battle with cancer. She was born on March 30, 1936 and was a lifelong
resident of New Bedford. She worked as a switchboard operator at St. Luke’s
Hospital for over 50 years.
Helen was all about family and was devoted to her children. She enjoyed
organizing family gatherings, and preparing great food and fun
entertainment. She especially loved spending time with her grandson,
Aleksandr, and her grandnephews, Aaron and Peter Sughrue. She also shared
a close bond with her nephew, Michael Correia, of Fall River.
She was predeceased by her parents, Antone and Helen (Cabral) Cabeca, and
by her beloved husband of 51 years, James H. Banks.
Helen will be greatly missed by her children, James and Steven Banks of New
Bedford, David Banks of Cataumet, MA, Joan Banks of Lakeville, ME, as well
as her grandson, Aleksandr Banks of Cataumet, MA. She also leaves behind
her brothers, Anthony Cabeca and his wife, Priscilla, and John Cabeca, her
sisters, Dolores Cabeca and MaryAnn Vandal and her husband, Herve, all of
New Bedford, her sister-in-law Nora Banks of Cataumet, MA, as well as
numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends.
"Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes, for those who love
with their heart and soul, there is no separation.”
A memorial service will be held from 1PM-3PM on Saturday, January 3rd at
Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford, MA. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
