New Bedford – Manuel R. Alberto, age 88 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of 66 years to Auzenda (Sousa) Alberto and the son of Maria da Gloria (Pinheiro) and Guilherme Rodrigues Alberto. Manuel was born in Santa Luzia, Pico, Açores but lived most of his life on the island of Faial before immigrating to this country 55 years ago. As a New Bedford resident, he worked in several factories including Continental Screw, Carol Cable and Stride-Rite.
Many considered him a true friend and he was always ready to help anyone in need. A very proud grandfather, Manuel was happiest when his grandchildren came to visit especially his little Francisco.
His family includes his wife, Auzenda, of New Bedford; his daughter, Maria Fatima and her husband, Sergio Soares , of Burlington, Ma; proud grandfather of Melanie Schumann and her husband, Doug, of Medford, Ma; and Rodney Soares of Burlington, Ma; beloved great grandfather of Francisco Schumann who was the apple of his eye; sister in-law, Fernanda Silva, niece, Ivone Meltzer of Florida as well as several nieces and nephews in Canada, Florida and the Boston area.
Mr. Alberto was predeceased by 3 siblings: Eduino, Guilherme and Carlos Pinheiro.
Visitation for Mr. Alberto will take place in the funeral home on Friday, October 10 from 9:30 A.M. – 11:30 A.M. and continuing with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 12:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, Ma.
