New Bedford – Laureana Silva, age 91 of New Bedford, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2014 at home with her family by her side. She was the loving wife of the late Arthur Silva and the daughter of Mariana da Conceicao and Manuel Rodrigues Vargas. Mrs. Silva was born in Pico, Açores, moved to the New Bedford area in 1959 and worked at New England Pleating Mill as a Seamstress until her retirement.
Laureana was devoted catholic and a former member of the Holy Ghost Society. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and painting. She was also a fantastic cook.
She leaves behind her children: Daniel Silva of New Bedford, Maria Bonneau of New Bedford, Ludovina Marcus and her husband, Craig, of Pittsburgh, Arthur Silva of New Bedford, and Antonio Silva and his wife, Julie, of Westport; 8 grandchildren: Vicky, Nicole, Norman, Melanie, Manny, Keith, Stephanie, and Tessa, and 1 great grandchild Thomas. She is also survived by her siblings: Isilda Costa and Mateus Vargas both of California and predeceased by several other siblings.
Her funeral will be Wednesday, June 18 beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. and continuing with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are welcomed to attend. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
