New Bedford – Nicolau J. Vasconcelos, age 82 of New Bedford, died Friday February 14, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of 58 years to Gilda (Cabral) and the son of Maria Conceicao (Cabral) and Manuel Vasconcelos. Nicolau was born Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores, lived in Montreal for some time before moving to this country in 1970. He worked as a Machine Operator at Cornell Dubilier as well as various jobs at Mickey Madam and Berkshire Hathaway. Mr. Vasconcelos enjoyed watching soccer and rooting on his favorite team, Sporting, but most of all, he was happiest in the company of his family.
His family includes his wife, Gilda Vasconcelos of New Bedford, 2 sons: Emanuel Vasconcelos and his wife, Linda, of New Bedford and the late Rui Vasconcelos; 3 grandchildren: Christopher, Justin and Monica Vasconcelos; 3 great grandchildren: Avery, Cole and Emma; 2 brothers: Sidonio Vasconcelos of Toronto and the late Cristovao Vasconcelos; as well as several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be Tuesday, February 18 beginning at 8:00 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Monday evening in the funeral home from 4 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements are placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
