New Bedford – Leonard P. Sylvia, age 94 of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Monday February 3, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary (Viger) Sylvia whom he cared for through illness until her passing. He was born in New Bedford and was formerly employed at Old Colony Trucking as a truck driver. Mr. Sylvia was a member of the Stackhouse Club of So. Dartmouth for 15 years, the Portuguese Sports Club of New Bedford, the American Legion Post 0459 and VFW Post 6643 of East Freetown. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing cards and he was an avid dog lover.
1st Sergeant Leonard P. Sylvia proudly served his country during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He received many decorations during his service including the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star.
He was the brother of the late Eugene P. Sylvia and his late wife, Katherine, the late Laura Carreiro and the late Alice Rego. Other members of his family include nieces and nephews: Sal Fernandes and his wife, Theresa, of Fairhaven, Jean-Marie Scrima and her son, Noah, of Lakeland, Fla, Richard L. Sylvia and his wife Wallburga of Lake Wales, Fla, Roland and his wife, Cynthia, of Wareham, Ryan Sylvia of New Jersey, Kathleen Genden and her husband Lawrence of Florida, the late Dorene Fernandes, Michael Fernandes and his wife, Jeralyn, of South Dartmouth, the late Kim Bennett, Kenneth Bussiere and his wife, Robin, of New Bedford, the late Margaret Ouimette and her husband Donald of Fairhaven, Jeannine Greenleaf and her husband, Paul, of Maine, Christine Raymond and her husband, Guy, of New Jersey, Joanne Mahan and her husband Patrick of Delaware, Rachel Johnson and her husband John of New Jersey; 4 sister in-laws: the late Helen Louganis, the late Theresa Bussiere, Katherine Fernandes of New Bedford, Regina Picard and many great nieces and great nephews.
A private burial with full military honors will take place in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Arrangements are placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
