New Bedford – Henry Lopes, age 96, passed away on Wednesday December 11, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the companion of 30 years of Patricia Downs, and a son of the late Mary (Emilia) and Peter Lopes. He was born in New Bedford, spent all of his life here excluding his time in the military and was self-employed as a landscaper. Henry proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII.
His family includes his companion, Patricia Downs of Fairhaven; his wife Kostadina Couris; 4 children: Barry Lopes and his wife, Marguerite of Stoughton, Theresa Vigil of Denver, CO, Joan Cunningham of Littleton, CO and Sandra Lopes of New Bedford; 2 granddaughters: Desiree Gonsalez and Denise Walker; siblings: Emily Lomba of Dartmouth, Rosemary Joseph of New Jersey, and Albert Lopes of New Bedford, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Agnes Lopes, Leonard Lopes, James Lopes, Edward Lopes, John Lopes and Stanley Lopes.
Henry’s Funeral is Monday December 16th at 9:15 A.M. at the funeral Home and burial with military honors will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home Sunday, December 15 from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
