Ernest C. Souza, Jr.

New Bedford – Ernest C. Souza Jr., age 75, passed away on Monday November 25, 2013 at Our Lady’s Haven after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was the loving husband of 57 years this January to Mary (Nunes) Souza and a son of the late Mary (Devalles) and the late Ernest C. Souza, Sr. He was born in New Bedford, spent all of his life here excluding his time in the military and worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. Ernest proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years including a tour in the Vietnam War and held the rank of Technical Sergeant. He graduated Fisher College with an Associate’s Degree in Business, was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed fishing, hunting, country music and bowling.
His family includes his wife, Mary of New Bedford; 3 children: Joanne Braga and her husband, Kevin, of Dartmouth, Katherine Lemmertz and her husband, Louis, of New Bedford, and David Souza and his wife, Audria, of W. Greenwich R.I.; 4 grandchildren: Melissa Amaral, Jennifer Mattos, Stephanie Oliveira and Samantha Oliveira; 5 great grandchildren: Quinn deMelo, Layla Amaral, Elizabeth Mattos, Aiva Perry and Victoria Almeida; 4 siblings: Ronald Souza, Paul Souza, the late Richard Souza and the late Carol Richard; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home Sunday, December 1 from 4 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A private Funeral Service and burial with full military honors will take place at Massachusetts National Cemetery. Arrangements placed in the care of PERRY FUNERAL HOME, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
